Chelsio helps build world’s largest 10GbE cluster at Purdue

CHELSIO HELPS BUILD WORLD’S LARGEST 10GbE CLUSTER AT PURDUE

More than 1,000 Chelsio iWARP RDMA Adapters Enable The First Internationally Ranked Academic Supercomputer Wired Solely For 10Gb Ethernet

SUNNYVALE, CA – July 22, 2009 – Chelsio Communications Inc., the leading provider of 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) adapters and ASIC solutions, today announced that Purdue University’s Coates Cluster, which is expected to be the world’s first internationally ranked academic supercomputer wired solely with high speed 10 GbE, was fully assembled and running jobs in half a day.

Matrix Integration, Inc., a solution provider, partnered with Hewlett Packard and Chelsio to deliver 1,200 HP dual quad-core computer nodes using AMD processors paired with an equal number of Chelsio iWARP RDMA adapters.  Verizon Business Network Services provided the integration services for the Cisco Nexus switches.  Coates was assembled yesterday before lunchtime by more than 200 Purdue IT staff and student volunteers, technology vendor and integration partners.   Coates is expected to rank in the top 50 supercomputers worldwide when the next ranking is published in the fall 2009.

“Building world-class supercomputers and other infrastructure for science and engineering at Purdue is business as usual and through the superb efforts of our staff and technology partners we brought up the Coates Cluster in half a day,” said John P. Campbell, associate VP of the Rosen Center for Advanced Computing, Purdue University.   “The Coates Cluster is unique in that it utilizes a single Unified Wire of 10Gb Ethernet connections – making this the largest of its kind in the world.  This system will offer a great many of our users the opportunity to use 10Gb iWARP RDMA technology that was unavailable before Coates.”

“Chelsio is pleased to be an active participant in the successful build-out of the Coates Cluster, the world’s largest 10Gb Ethernet cluster,” said Kianoosh Naghshineh, president and CEO of Chelsio.   “Coates will be ranked among the Top 50 supercomputers later this year, and the trend is clearly established that with the multi-vendor IETF standard iWARP protocol, Ethernet RDMA clustering enables a scalable, high performance network at a much lower total cost of ownership.”

“This is an exhilarating event for us to be a part of an industry first with the Coates Cluster,” said Chad Williams, public sector manager for Matrix Integration. “Matrix Integration is pleased to be part of this team and envision many other data intensive and HPC applications and opportunities where we can partner with Chelsio.”
